The legislation, modeled off of California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard, aims to reduce carbon intensity from the on-road transportation sector in New York by 20% by 2031. If passed, it would be the second-largest clean fuel standard in the United States, surpassed only by California's. The New York Senate passed the Clean Fuel Standard on Thursday, the first time it had done so despite similar legislation being produced in prior sessions. California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard led to a boom in investments in fuels made from non-petroleum feedstocks. Canada has also implemented a Clean Fuel Standard which is set to take effect later this year.

Justice Hector LaSalle would have been the first Latino to lead New York’s court system . Kathy Hochul ’s nominee to lead the state court system was again rejected by her fellow Democrats in the state Senate during a Wednesday floor vote, ending a weekslong procedural standoff. Justice Hector LaSalle’s nomination to be chief judge of the Court of Appeals was voted down by the Democratic-controlled chamber, 20 in favor to 39 opposed. Most Democrats voted against Justice LaSalle, who currently runs a midlevel appeals court based in Brooklyn, while most Republicans were in favor.

Hochul's choice, Hector LaSalle, is the presiding justice of a midlevel state appeals court in Brooklyn, and would have been the first Hispanic chief judge of the state's highest court, the Court of Appeals. Many had hoped Hochul would replace former Chief Judge Janet DiFiore with a more liberal judge. "But it was not a vote on the merits of Justice LaSalle, who is an overwhelmingly qualified and talented jurist.

Sinema’s interests are no longer necessarily the Democrats’ best interests in the next Congress, and the 2024 Senate map became even more complicated for Democrats with Sinema’s decision. The Democrats who run against independent Sen. Angus King in Maine have not gained traction in recent elections. Having two people in the race who are going to caucus with the Democratic Party likely makes it more difficult for the Democrats to win. All that said, the Democrats already have a difficult map heading into 2024. With Sinema’s break from the Democratic party, the road is, if nothing else, curvier for Democrats.
